Live4Life is all about building community relationships to improve and understand young people's mental health and reduce suicide.
Live4Life Glenelg has developed a brilliant collaboration with Blue Light Portland, which gets Crew out in the community four or five times a year, having heaps of fun and also raising valuable funds for the local partnership.
Run for 9 to 14 year olds, Blue Light Portland provides an opportunity for local police and community members to work together to host a fun experience for young people in a safe environment. Events are supervised by local police and are held at the Portland Civic Hall.
The partnership between Blue Light and Live4Life Glenelg was formed when Blue Light co-ordinator Lee Anne Nelson was seeking volunteers and the Glenelg Crew were exploring funding opportunities for mental health promotional activities in schools. It was a perfect match!
Now in its fifth year, the collaboration sees Crew members volunteer at the discos and Blue Light makes a donation towards the Crew events and activities during the year. The most recent event was held in August when Raine, Stella &and Zep from Glenelg Crew were in attendance to help with the entry process, canteen, bag check ins, and clean up.
Blue Light Discos are an Aussie institution. It's nearly 50 years since the first Blue Light event was held at Kilsyth Memorial Hall in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The police-supervised underage dances have since spread across the globe, with Blue Light now boasting chapters in New Zealand, Polynesia, the UK and Europe.
