Talon’s Story

My name is Talon Gostelow, I'm an advocate for mental health, authentic role-modelling, and person-centred practice. Centring my work around first-hand experiences, collaboration with community at local events, and professional opportunities across organisations like YouthLive4Life, Macedon Ranges Shire Council, and The Creative Ranges Foundation, the perspective I bring is layered and well considered.

As with many others I went along in my year eight cohort to watch the Live4Life Launch. So, feeling largely indifferent with a hint of vague curiosity, I signed up for the Crew. 'Who cares about some random after-school program' I thought. 'It meant I got to hang out with my friends, right?' Well, little did I know. That's when my journey to understand the everyday person's 'psychological landscape' was catapulted — because of the Live4Life program.

Beginning as a wee crew member in late 2019 my fourteen-year-old mind was only just gaining awareness of else, let alone self. Having the structure of Life4life in addition to great mentors and role-models such as: Kyle, Matty, Laura, and the remaining MRSC staff of the time, gave me confidence while on the precipice of mental health's vastness. This has supported me in tackling my own myriad of challenges. As well as develop the fundamental skillset to work in the social sector as I do now, being certified with a Diploma of Community Services. Over the last five years of involvement with Live4life I've been: a Crew member, Crew4Life, freelance support, and now Crew Champion. Not just the program, but because of the conversations, stories, and opportunities, I've learned so much. Something I've learned for certain is the value of a preventive model on our society.

It goes without saying that preventative AND reactive models are equally as essential — hence why we receive funding alongside them. See our data here.

So often do we see the blurring of lines with misinformation, and/or misjudgement, that we need to teach young people the essential skills of seeing through stigma. Seeing through the meandering faff and cutting right to the root of the issue. I'm really appreciative of the support by the beautiful people in this community — I wouldn't be where I am without them. Live4Life is 'An unstoppable force'.
