Change it up!
Facilitated by the Foundation for Young Australians in partnership with Macedon Ranges Shire Council, ‘Change It Up’ gives young people aged 16 to 19 the opportunity to initiate change in their local communities.
After a weekend of workshops and activities, 17 local students pitched 11 projects to a panel of community leaders and an audience of 80 local citizens on Monday 30
April at the Kyneton Town Hall, each idea an inspiring solution to the issues faced by young people.
Year 11 student, Maddy Stewart, was awarded $1000 in seed funding from the Foundation for Young Australians to start work on an anti-bullying project at her high school. Other project pitches included building inclusive education, supporting young people to manage the stress of VCE, challenging youth stereotypes, improving drug and alcohol education for children and teenagers, improving recreational spaces for young people in Kyneton and Lancefield and providing forums for young people to have a say on issues such as development, sustainability and the environment.
We spoke to Gus Hocking, one of the young change makers who took part in the part in the program. Gus said he thought Change It Up! was a great idea and really well run. “People got a lot out of it” Gus said, explaining “all of the ideas that people put forward have a really good reason behind them, I think all of the ideas could be made possible”.
